Kumite Jutsu
(Group Class Techniques)
1. Twisting Talon. (ABC). Right wrist grab.
A.) Step back with left, counter grab his inside wrist, pivot to rear, right rear kick to body.
B.) Bend right wrist and form ‘crane beak’; rotate hand counter clockwise to full stop; then, reverse to counter grab his left top inside wrist or right top outside wrist; step back with left to cat stance, pull in, to or past, right hip, right front snap kick to center or left side of body.
C.) Keeping the right hand straight, start as ‘B’; then; step back with right then left; pull in, to or past, right hip, right side kick to left knee.
2. The Bridge. Rear hair grab. Shuangtoulong Quan
Step back with left behind his right leg to fighting horse, left hand circles around behind his head, grab hair (forehead), pull back and down, right tiger mouth grab throat; pivot 90°, step right then left; take down, kneel with right, slam head into ground –or- pivot 90° left after right step; takedown.
3. Dragon Returns. (AB). Left hand chest grab.
A.) Pin his left hand with left, step back with left, pivot to fighting stance, right vertical forearm to left elbow (Tw-10), break; circle right arm counter clockwise rotating his broken elbow, continue motion to right side elbow to left side of his head, left palm to right side head.
B.) Pin his left hand with left, step left with left, pivot to bow, right vertical forearm to left elbow; step back right then left, slide right hand to his left wrist. left hand to guard, pull his left hand in towards – or - past right hip with right, right side kick to left side of body or knee.
4. Three Tongues of Fire. (ABC1-2). Push, punch, or grab.
A.) Left foot forward. Hop forward 45˚ left with left to crane, parry with left, right in guard, right front snap kick to left knee, right 45˚ kick to groin, right side kick to right knee.
B.) Left foot forward. Start as ‘A’; right roundhouse kick to groin; right foot moves forward, right side kick to right knee, forcing him down; plant to dropping stance adjusting distance; right rear kick to back.
C1.) Right foot forward. Start as ‘A’; right front snap kick to right ribs, right side kick to right knee; plant to dropping stance; right rear kick to back.
C2.) Right foot forward. Start as ‘A’; front snap kick to right armpit or arm, side kick to right knee, back (or side) kick to back.
5. Chinese Sword. (A1-2,B). Left push. Chu Chaodao Quan
A1.) Step back with left; pivot to fighting stance, right inward twisting strike, left outward parry counter grab his left wrist; pull his left arm down, right back knuckle to Tw-17.
A2.) Closer. Same as ‘A1’ except; step forward with right; right elbow to face.
B.) Same as ‘A1’ or ‘A2’ except; back knuckle to left floating ribs; right vertical forearm to elbow, pivot to bow (bending him over); shift to naihanchi, circle right elbow 360° counter clockwise; shift to bow, pull with left, right dropping elbow to spine.
6. Shackle Break. (AB). Both wrists grabbed (behind). Shuangtoulong Quan
A.) Counter grab both wrists, step forward with left; pull both arms forward, right rear kick to groin/body; plant back with right to fighting stance, circle right arm under his left arm; finish like “Kimono Grab ‘C’”.

B.) Start as ‘A’; maintain grip with left, circle right arm clockwise, pull his right arm forward, release, shift body back, right dropping elbow to spine; place both palms on top of his head; push down and left knee to face.
7. The Manchu. Right push, punch, or grab. Seisan ending
Step forward 45° left with left to bow, left clockwise circular downward parry and catch right punch, right counter clockwise circular downward forearm strike right elbow; right side kick knee; plant forward; hook crook of arm with right pull up, reverse left grip and rotate his right arm clockwise to arm lock; take down.
8. Wing Break. (ABCD). Face down on ground.
A.) Step next to his right arm with the left foot; slip right foot under his right arm, lift his arm with right instep and release so his right hand is on the ground, elbow in air; right heel stomp to his upper right arm to break.
B.) Start as ‘A’ except; slip left instep under his right forearm, hook at wrist, right foot in crane stance; same time: reverse crane stance, right heel stomp to his right elbow.
C.) Trying to get up. Sweep his right wrist with right foot; right side kick to his head or ribs.
D.) On all fours. Step forward with left, right front shin kick to his ribs (turning him on back); step forward right – left; right heel stomp to heart.
9. Crossing the Mountain. (AB). Right push, grab, or kick. Er Chaodao Quan
A.) Step forward 45° with left to fighting stance, same time: right outward extended blocking strike, left punch right ribs; shift 90° left to dropping stance, right hammer fist to right kidney left hand to guard; shift back to fighting stance, grab his throat with right, right side kick to left knee, throw on ground.
B.) Step forward 45° with left, right downward blocking strike to his right leg, left hand to guard; pivot to fighting stance, left punch right ribs; shift 90° left to dropping stance, right hammer fist to right kidney left hand to guard; right hand to guard, right side kick to his right knee; plant forward to fighting stance, right side elbow - left palm heel strike to head.
10. The Viper. (ABC). Push, punch, or grab.
A.) Right / inside. Inward circular parry with right, continue motion, step forward with right to fighting stance; right elbow to ribs, left four finger eye shot; right reverse knife hand to right anterior triangle of neck. Use your brain. Think of different endings.
B.) Right / outside. Inward circular parry with left, continue motion, step forward with left to fighting stance; left elbow to ribs, right four finger eye shot; step back left with right, slide right hand down to his right wrist, left forearm on his right elbow; pivot to fighting stance, break or takedown.
C.) Left. Start as ‘A’, then; step right with left, right back knuckle to left ribs, left hand to guard; pivot to fighting stance, right punch to left side head. Think of variations after back knuckle.
11. Circling the Sun. (AB). Right push, punch, or grab. Naihanchi Shodan
A.) Step forward 45° left with left, left inward parry, circle his right fist clockwise with right (right arm high); right naihanchi kick to right leg, right dropping forearm twist strike (dropping weight) to (Gb-20).
B.) Shuffle forward with right to cat, inward parry with left, circle his right fist clockwise with right, right forearm twist strike to right side of neck (St-9) (sliding upwards).
12. Ascending to Heaven. (AB). Rising from sitting.
A.) Lean forward and rise, twist to fighting stance; jump double front snap kick.
B.) Lean forward, twist back, place both hands on ground, back kick.
13. Attacking Shadows. (AB). Against blocks.
A.) Bend elbow, circle 360° (inward and down), punch to face.
B.) Crane hook his wrist, pull in to chest, reverse and punch to face.
14. Eagle’s Beak. (AB). Front hair grab.
A.) Left hand. Pin his left hand to head with left, step forward with right, pivot to fighting stance, right middle knuckle strike to armpit; circle right arm counter clockwise, downward horizontal forearm strike left arm; shuffle forward to half bow, grab left arm with left, right punch to face.
B.) Start as ‘A’; right middle knuckle uppercut strike to Tw-12; shuffle forward, right vertical forearm outside left elbow, change left pin to left wrist grab; rotate his left arm counter clockwise; cross over left 45° back with right - left and kneel with right to takedown.
15. The Dart. (AB). Against pushes, punches, or grabs.
A.) Right punch. Step back with right to fighting stance, left crane hook right wrist, right hand to guard; left one finger eye shot.
B.) Left punch. Step back with right to fighting stance, left palm heel left wrist, right hand to guard; left one finger eye shot.
16. Leveling the Clouds. (AB). Right front snap kick. Seisan
A.) Left 45°forward crane blocking strike with right leg, hands to guard; (right front snap kick slides by) right side kick to left knee.
B.) Kick catches on crane leg. front snap kick with craned leg enough to disengage, then continue as in ‘A’.
17. Thundering Hammer. (AB.). Right punch. Naihanchi Nidan
A.) Left inward parry, right inward twist with right reverse hammer fist to nerve above right elbow, right front snap kick to left leg; plant forward with right to fighting stance, finish like “Attacking Defense ‘A’”.
B.) Start as ‘A’; step forward with right to cat, right back knuckle twist punch his right biceps (no kick); step forward 45°left with left to fighting stance, circle left arm counter clockwise under his right arm and finish like “Kimono Grab ‘B’”.
18. The Butterfly. (A1-2B). Solar plexus high push, or grab. Naihanchi Shodan
A1.) Bends over. Right outward downward pressing parry (palm up) against right punch; step back with right to fighting stance, counter grab and pull, left back knuckle to heart point; left reverse knife hand to left side neck; take down.
A2.) Remains straight. Start as ‘A1’; pull right hand back (pressure against elbow), left inside forearm strike to biceps; rotate left arm to back of elbow, maintain right grip, step back with right, pivot and kneel on left knee.
B.) Left punch. left outward downward pressing parry (palm up) against left punch; step back with left to fighting stance, counter grab and pull back with left, right reverse knife hand strike to Gv-16.
19. The Sickle. (AB). Right elbow grab. Naihanchi Sandan
A.) Left arm. counter grab his left with left (thumb into thumb joint); raise right arm vertical outside his left arm, step forward 45° left with right; apply pressure 45°down against left forearm; step forward with left, kneel with right.
B.) Right arm. counter grab his right with left, (fingertips to thumb joint); raise right arm vertical outside right arm, step forward 45° right with right; apply pressure 45° down against right forearm; step forward right-left, kneel with left.
20. Attacking the Wall. (ABC). Right push or grab. Naihanchi Sandan
A.) Attack. Step forward with right to cat, same time: with left forearm horizontal, strike solar plexus with downward twisting left knife hand, right uppercut, below knife hand.
B.) Not so close. Start as `A’; same time: left palm heel to right biceps, right uppercut to face.
C.) Farther. Parry down with left; step forward with right to fighting stance, right shoulder punch to right shoulder.
21. Dance of Death. Face down on ground.
Jump, both heels to kidneys; squat, double palm heels to back of head, drive his face to ground; grab chin with both, yank up, pin shoulders with knees; catch top of head with left, right on chin, twist counter clockwise; hands to ‘crane’; right knife hand chops throat, left hand on back of head; kneel with left knee on back, force him down; spring up, reverse 180°, drop right knee on spine, swing right knife hand to left side of neck; jump straight up right heel to spine; step forward left 45° to crane stance, beside his left shoulder; right heel stomp to head; dispose of body.
22. Sweeping Servant. Right arm. Seisan
Step forward with right to cat, left (Seisan) downward parry right punch, right upward fingertip strike to groin; then left side neck point.
23. Chinese Corkscrew. Right punch.
Step forward 45° left with left, right outward parry and catch right wrist, left inside forearm strike to right biceps. Same time: rotate left elbow up, against right shoulder blade, pull with right, place his right hand in our right armpit; reverse left arm to vertical forearm on top of his right upper arm point, slide right arm under his right wrist, pinning; cross back in advance with right, pivot, pulling up and out with right, down and out with left, kneeling with left.
